simple box construction ::: the 2015 update

::: now it is the beginning of august and the year is 3/4 of the way through and this update has been delayed and put off and pushed aside and brought back and put away again for most of this year. with each new delay more and more items were added as a death cinematic and simple box construction were in fact productive and busy. so let us begin.


::: after what seemed like forever the DEADMEN - 2 POEMS BY: A DEATH CINEMATIC book was finally completed and shipped. there is a full description with more images and details here.




::: back in the middle of june a death cinematic played its third live show with none other than insect ark. it was amazing to share the stage with such talent. in addition to playing live with insect ark, simple box construction contributed some photography for their outstanding new album. design and layout was done by dana (of insect ark) and the egg diorama was made by nicole boitos. you can pick up a copy of the album here.




::: the four new tracks that were finished last year are still slated for release sometime soon. two for the amongst epilogues compilation on AOsmosis records and two for a split with murmur ring due out later this year as a joint release with geweih ritual documents and simple box construction. test tapes for the split have come in and the design and layout work is starting to take shape.

- the amongst epilogues tracks are titled HOMELAND! HOMELAND! and RESISTANCE IS YOUR SOUND! which are the last two lines from a poem writen telepathically through dr. treznok by lasse-marc riek.

::: since we are talking of new tracks, a death cinematic has contributed two exclusive tracks for two different compilations. the first track is titled: NO LONGER DO I IMPEDE THIS DARKNESS. recorded exclusively for the we are invisible now - volume 1 compilation which was released back in march of this year. a two hour collection of ambient, minimal electronic, experimental and drone music. this is available as a free download and features tracks by sleep orchestra, colony, and i am esper amongst others. totally worth your while.



- the second exclusive track was recorded for a compilation to benefit keith utech, founder of utech records, and his family in their very difficult time. the track is titled FOR THIS TOO... SHALL PASS. the compilation, and suddenly everything, absolutely everything, was there, features 41 exclusive and live tracks by some of the best artists working in experimental and drone music, including; locrian, insect ark, nadja, thisquietarmy, and many many more. running time for this colossus is 4 1/2 hours. all proceeds, after bandcamp and paypal fees, go to the utech family fund.




::: in april of this year simple box construction started and then ended a hand written poem/ post card project. the initial idea was to select an original image and write a poem and some thoughts on the back and send them out to people who have subscribed. at the end of the year i would have made a custom folio for all the subscribers to hold the 52 post cards and poems. unfortunately this project only saw five images and poems due to time restraints. you can see the 5 images and read the poems on the slumbering in the fires site.




::: i've been doing some drawing, design work, and some other non musical projects that i have started some years ago. some of the drawings and designs ended up on the fourth and (hopefully) final custom pedal board and amp. the pedal boards are hand built with dove tail joinery and hand printed.

::: but wait! what about the new album?! isn't there a whole new a death cinematic album on the way?!? indeed, there is and some other splits. but the new a death cinematic album is in the works again after it has stalled out due to a lot of personal stuff. it is going to be a long album, probably close to 80 minutes in length. i am mixing and mastering the tracks now. the packaging is going through some redesigning and altering as some of the material is not behaving as it should. the front cover drawing for the album has been done for a while now but with the new design i started a whole new drawing for the back cover. there will be updates on the a death cinematic/ simple box construction instagram and facebook pages as things progress. track previews are coming soon too. one of the tracks, THE NIGHT OF OUR SORROW HAS FALLEN, WE REMAIN WITHOUT LIGHT IN OUR EYES, from the album was put out on an ep sometime back. the track is going to be reworked a little in the mastering phase to fit with the rest of the album.






::: finally, here are some photos i've been taking and some videos of some practice sketches. the pictures here are a very small representation of the images i have amassed as i shoot pictures everyday and now have thousands.

::: the second A DEATH CINEMATIC live show will be 11.15.14 at the trumbullplex in detriot. you can read all about it and preview the other artists here. i'll be opening the show so get in early.



::: in preparation for the show there has been a a lot of practicing and experimenting. here is a short video of a practice. the audio was captured by the video recording device so its not the best sound but you get the idea.



::: some other things happening at the simple box HQ worthy of note. the interview with diy conspiracy has been posted. you can head over and read the lengthy piece here. the DEADMEN books are crawling to completion. right after this book is released all focus will be shifted to finishing the next full length. the details for the murmur ring split are being worked out and that should be here relatively soon. some A DEATH CINEMATIC tracks have recently been featured on the earl times broadcast. lastly, i am working on putting together a mailing list for all things SIMPLE BOX CONSTRUCTION and A DEATH CINEMATIC. that is it for now. as always, thank you for checking in.

simple box construction ::: summer ending 2014 update

::: well it's the dog days of summer and about time to fill in on all the going ons here at simple box construction. and of course things here couldn't be more hectic so lets start with a bit of bad news. the FREAK festival in ohio that was supposed to have happened in mid august was cancelled! too bad since i was looking forward to getting out and playing live but i hope to get out and do some live shows locally before the summer is out and in early fall.

::: spring and so far this summer has been real busy and finding time to do all the things i had in mind is proving to be a real challenge. this includes the t shirt pre orders from early summer which have been delayed as i am working to finish up the DEADMEN books which are to ship with all the pre ordered the shirts. to all those waiting still, my sincerest apologies. (more on both items below.)

::: i have finished several new tracks while working on the new album, which is on going and with any luck will be released before the year is out. at the moment simple box construction/ a death cinematic is being interviewed for diy conspiracy, this should be posted sometime in the next few weeks or so. it's turning into a lengthy, and hopefully interesting, interview. in addition to this i've been finishing up older editions and slowly starting work on a few odd things that were put on the back burner for a long while now. these include non musical releases and editions from simple box construction and a death cinematic which include art card suites, collections of photos and hand bound books. if interested, you might find some info about these projects digging through the archive of posts on this site. it should also be mentioned that there is a new simple box construction you tube channel.

::: as mentioned above, the third a death cinematic t shirt - BENEATH THAT GRAND USURPER is now available. huge thanks go out to sage from heathen harvest for helping me get this done and printed. the details and paypal button for the shirts will be added to the product pages on this site soon but in the meantime they can always be ordered from the simple box construction online store. a few people have taken advantage of the t shirt pre order and i want to give extra special thanks for the support and again, apologize for the delayed shipping. as the pre orders came in i wanted do something extra for those fans. i decided that as a thank you, each pre ordered shirt will ship with a free copy of the next a death cinematic release, DEADMEN. however, this good intention has somewhat backfired and delayed my shipping of all the pre orders. so, for those who cannot wait any longer or do not want the DEADMEN book, please contact me and i will ship out your shirt asap.

::: and so a few words on this DEADMEN release. it is a small hand printed art book of 28 original images and 2 poems by a death cinematic. each book in the limited edition of 24 has an inset dried plant in the body of the book. the fabrication of this little book has proven to be a lot more involved and time consuming than i originally thought. (this underestimation of time is turning into a bad habit.) each book takes well over 4 hours to complete from start to finish. finding that much time to work on this edition each day is not quite possible. but they are getting done and will ship out as soon as each one is completed. those who follow simple box on instagram and a death cinematic on facebook can see all the production progress photos so far. there is a small quantity of these books that will be left over and will be available for purchase. details on ordering and a full description with new images will be posted here on the product page and in the simple box online store very soon.

simple box construction ::: the big summer/ fall 2012 update

::: this has been a long time coming. as the weeks turned to months and now summer has surrendered to autumn, it is hard to believe that the last post on this site was way back in april and now we are at the middle of november. it is time for a simple box construction update and it is a big one. even though not much has been happening here, on this site, the summer has been busier than ever for a death cinematic and simple box. as much as has been done there are still plenty of things that haven't been touched yet since the last update. below, you will find a rundown of all the things i've been up to and will attempt to do and finish up before the year is out.



::: first thing is first, the new releases: a lot of the summer was spent recording, mixing, and mastering new material. a lot of new material and as some (many?) of you may know there is a couple of releases coming up real soon. maybe even before the year is out. one of them is a very small edition of a 7" on a great little label out of new zealand. i can't say much more about this (and i might have said too much already) but details will come soon enough.

::: the other release is going to be an inaugural a death cinematic cassette release on an awesome tape label, tyco magnetic anomalies. simple box construction has been granted the honor of designing and making the covers for this release which, now that the mock ups have been approved, are being fabricated as this is written. this tape clocks in at just about an hour and is the next a death cinematic full length. stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks. progress of the cover artwork and design may be viewed on the a death cinematic facebook page and release photo album.




::: and so with all the material that has been recorded and is now ready for the mix there will be another album coming right after these releases are buttoned up as well as some very exciting splits and collaborations. i will post more details about these in the very near future as deadlines and commitments are confirmed, this update is already large enough.

::: in addition to all the recording and mastering, simple box construction has been very busy building stock of its current releases and getting it out to interested distros. i have also started to revive some visual simple box editions that went on hold awhile back. there will be detailed updates on these projects as they get closer to completion. there are a few ideas that have been nagging and tugging at me so look for more photo and drawing books.

::: while working on all this i did manage to write some poetry too. so after a long hiatus from the poetry site i will be posting some new work there in the coming days.



::: speaking of photos and drawings. i have been taking an exorbitant amount of pictures. those connected with a death cinematic via facebook (personal page) can testify to that. organizing and editing images can be very time consuming. if you are on facebook you can check them out here (personal page). there is a tentative plan for starting just a photo and image simple box construction site. examples of pictures

::: i have also been doing quite a bit of drawing, mostly of themes relating to the coming releases. some of these might be t shirt designs as i am trying to figure out a way to screen the t shirts on a budget in house. the idea would be to run a pre order campaign for the shirts so only enough t shirts are made for the people who want them. the point of this is to not tie up very limited resources in quantities of t shirts that would have to be printed elsewhere, instead print only what is needed and do it at simple box.

::: as an effort to raise funds for the label and project i am still selling some intaglio prints and proofs. to all those who have taken the leap and got one, thank you.

::: a death cinematic and simple box construction have been able to catch some print. in addition to all the a death cinematic reviews and interviews i have been getting and doing for various outstanding webzines, a death cinematic got a couple of print reviews in the german metal hammer and a nice one page feature in the u.k. zero tolerance music magazine. check out issue #48.

::: also, simple box is still working on putting up a video page so all videos can be viewed at one destination. there is quite a number of them out there now. a huge thank you to all those who have taken the time and effort to make them.

::: and the final bit of news for this update, simple box construction has opened a store on storeenvy.com. hopefully this will make it easier for people to purchase directly from simple box construction. the little store on the right sidebar will remain open but it is small and inconspicuous which makes it very easy to overlook. at the new store you'll be able to purchase all simple box releases and projects (prints, photos, drawings, hand bound books, etc.) and a death cinematic releases from other labels.



::: thank you to all for the continued support and interest. these projects of mine have turned 5 years old back on september 10th and that is directly due to all the great fans and people whom made this possible. here is to another 5 years and more. i will try to make the updates on a more regular basis as things occur. trying to play catch up every six months or so with all that is going on is a daunting task and a lot of things slip through the cracks. see you all very soon with the next update.
